Your massage therapist has seen it all. The snoring. The drooling. The stomach that won't stop gurgling at exactly the quietest moment. The client who talks through the entire session and the client who's so silent it's unnerving. They've seen thousands of bodies — literally thousands — and they have thoughts. They just can't say any of them out loud.
Lucky for you, I can. Here are 12 things your massage therapist wishes you knew.
1. "We don't care about your body." Not in a mean way. We mean we don't JUDGE your body. Scars, stretch marks, asymmetry, hair, no hair, too thin, too heavy, whatever your concern is — we've seen it before. Many times. You're not the first person with [whatever you're worried about], and you won't be the last. Just lie down. We're here to work on muscles, not judge aesthetics.
2. "Snoring is a compliment." When you fall asleep and start snoring during a massage, that's not embarrassing — it's evidence that we're doing our job. Your nervous system felt safe enough to fully let go. Congratulations, you achieved maximum relaxation. The snoring is just the soundtrack.
3. "Tell us if the pressure is wrong." We can't read your mind. We can read your muscles (tightness, temperature, texture), but we can't read your pain threshold. If it's too hard, say so. If it's too soft, say so. We will not be offended. We will be relieved that you communicated.
4. "Please shower before your appointment." We're about to be in close physical contact with you for 30-90 minutes. Clean skin is basic courtesy. You don't need to be freshly showered (arriving directly from the office is fine), but please don't arrive straight from the gym.
5. "Your phone is ruining your relaxation." That WhatsApp notification? The Instagram ping? Every time your phone buzzes, your nervous system gets a micro-jolt of stress. Put it on silent. Better yet, leave it in your locker. Instagram can wait 60 minutes.
6. "The stomach sounds are normal." When you lie down and relax, your digestive system kicks into gear. The gurgling is a sign that your parasympathetic nervous system is activated. It's literally proof that the massage is working. We don't care. We hear it all day.
7. "Crying is also normal." Massage releases stored tension, and sometimes that tension was holding back emotions. If you feel tears welling up, let them. We've seen it. We understand it. We won't bring it up unless you do. It's more common than you think.
8. "We know when you're holding your breath." When we work on a tender spot, many clients hold their breath. This makes the muscle tighter and the work less effective. Breathe through it. Deep exhales help muscles release.
9. "The music choice isn't personal." Yes, we've heard that exact pan flute track 400 times. No, we can't change it — the spa playlist is designed for neutral relaxation, not personal taste. Try to tune it out. Or focus on the massage. Either way, the pan flute stays.
10. "Skip the heavy meal beforehand." Lying face-down with a full stomach is uncomfortable. Light meal 1-2 hours before, or eat after.
11. "Tipping is appreciated, never expected." ₹100-300 is standard if you loved the session, but if you don't, that's also fine. What we really want is for you to feel better. And maybe book again.
12. "Regular clients are our favorite." Not because of the money. Because we get to see your progress. We learn your body — your specific tension patterns, your preferences, what works for you. The relationship between therapist and regular client is genuinely special.
